Idaho polls scatter widely, and our model shifts toward Risch
Three pollsters put the Republican incumbent's margin anywhere from four to 34 points; our average now sits at R+22.7, up from R+16.4 earlier today.

Four new surveys of Idaho's Senate race disagree sharply on its size. A Peak Insights poll of 500 likely voters, fielded August 11-13, had Republican Jim Risch at 52 percent and independent Todd Achilles at 18. A Bullfinch Group poll of 608 likely voters, fielded August 4-7, had Risch at 34 and Achilles at 30 — close enough that it is best read as a close result rather than a lead of a particular size. Change Research, polling 1,213 likely voters July 28-30, released two sets of numbers: Risch 43 to Achilles 19, and Risch 45 to Achilles 21.
Our model now puts the mean margin at R+22.7, with a 5th-to-95th percentile range from R+33.6 to R+11.7. That is wider for Risch than our previous run at 2:30 PM ET today, which had the mean at R+16.4 and a range from R+27.7 to R+5.3. The model gives the Republican a 100 percent chance in this seat; the chance of a non-Republican win, which stood at 1 percent in the prior run, now rounds to zero. Nothing here changes the shape of the race, only its estimated margin.
The unusual feature of the Idaho polling is the spread itself. The two most recent surveys, fielded a week apart, differ by 30 points on the margin. Note also that a large share of respondents in the Bullfinch and Change Research polls picked neither candidate, which leaves considerable room for the final margin to land well inside or outside our range.
Nationally, our model gives Democrats a 45 in 100 chance of Senate control and Republicans 55 percent, with a mean of 50.0 Democratic seats against the 51 they would need; a 50-50 split goes to Republicans on the vice president's tiebreak. Our generic-ballot average is D+6.7 across 26 polls in the last 45 days.
