Poll reaction NE-2

A small NE-2 poll nudges our forecast a fraction toward Republicans

SurveyUSA finds Denise Powell 46-42 over Brinker Harding among 182 likely voters; our model now gives Powell a 77 in 100 chance.

One new survey in Nebraska's 2nd District has Democrat Denise Powell at 46 percent and Republican Brinker Harding at 42 percent. That is SurveyUSA, sponsored by Grant Forbes, LLC, fielded September 8-13 among 182 likely voters. The sample is small and the payload lists no margin of error, so the four-point gap is best read as a close race rather than a measured lead.

Our model now gives Powell a 77 in 100 chance of winning the seat, with a mean margin of D+7.0 and a 5th-to-95th percentile range running from R+8.3 to D+22.3. The prior run, at 12:32 PM ET on September 14, had Powell at 79 percent and a mean margin of D+7.6. The new poll polls slightly below our average for the district, and the shift is in that direction, but two points of win probability is inside the noise of a single 182-person survey. Nothing about the race's shape changed.

Nationally, our generic ballot average stands at D+6.8 across 22 polls from the past 45 days. In the House, our model gives Democrats a 95 percent chance of reaching the 218 seats needed for control, with a mean of 241 Democratic seats. One caveat on that figure is ours to own: our simulation correlates error nationally, by census division, by state and by district, but we have no data to correlate demographically similar districts across state lines. Without that term, the 95 percent reads marginally firmer than a fuller model would make it.

Fifty days remain before the November 3 election.
