Two YouGov samples put Turek narrowly ahead in Iowa, and our estimate edges up
Our model now gives Josh Turek a 47 in 100 chance in the open Iowa Senate race, up from 45 earlier Friday, with a mean margin of R+0.4.

Two YouGov surveys of Iowa likely voters, both fielded September 3-8, have Democrat Josh Turek a few points ahead of Republican Ashley Hinson. One, of 2,041 likely voters, put Turek at 47 percent and Hinson at 43. The other, of 2,127 likely voters, had Turek at 45 and Hinson at 43 — a gap small enough that the race reads as close.
Our forecast moved slightly. The model now gives Turek a 47 in 100 chance of winning the seat and Hinson 53 percent, with a mean margin of R+0.4. The run finished at 2:32 PM ET Friday had Turek at 45 percent and a mean margin of R+0.8. That is a two-point shift in win probability and four-tenths of a point in margin: the new numbers nudged an already close estimate rather than rearranging it.
The uncertainty around that mean is wide. Our 5th-to-95th percentile range for the Iowa margin runs from R+10.5 to D+9.7, which is to say the model does not rule out a clear win for either candidate. This is an open seat; the Republican incumbent is Joni Ernst.
Nationally, our average of 24 generic-ballot polls over the past 45 days stands at D+6.7. In the Senate, we give Democrats a 49 percent chance of winning control and Republicans 50 percent, with a mean of 50.3 Democratic seats. Democrats need 51 seats for control and Republicans 50, because the vice president is a Republican and a 50-50 tie goes to the Republicans. Iowa sits close to the middle of that arithmetic, which is why a two-point move in one state's probability is worth recording even when it changes little else.
