Poll reaction Michigan Senate

Two MSU polls in Michigan match our forecast, which stays at 69 percent

El-Sayed leads by five among likely voters and four among registered voters, and our mean margin barely moved.

Two new surveys of the Michigan Senate race put Abdul El-Sayed ahead of Mike Rogers by mid-single digits. The Michigan State University Institute for Public Policy and Social Research/YouGov poll of 779 likely voters, fielded August 10-20, had El-Sayed at 50 percent and Rogers at 45. The same institute's poll of 913 registered voters over the same dates had El-Sayed at 48 and Rogers at 44. Neither release in the payload carries a stated margin of error, so the safest reading is that both point to a close race with El-Sayed on the better side of it.

Our model was already there. It gives El-Sayed a 69 in 100 chance of winning the seat, with Rogers at 31 percent — the same split as our previous run this morning. The mean margin moved from D+5.7 to D+5.6, which is noise, not news. Our 5th-to-95th percentile range runs from R+12.9 to D+24.2, wide enough to accommodate outcomes well beyond what either MSU poll shows. This is an open seat; the incumbent, Democrat Gary Peters, is not on the ballot.

The national picture around the race is close to even. Our model gives Democrats a 50 percent chance of Senate control and Republicans 49 percent, with a mean of 50.3 Democratic seats. Democrats need 51 seats for control and Republicans 50, because the vice president is a Republican and a 50-50 tie goes to the Republicans. That arithmetic is why a Michigan estimate at 69 percent matters more to the chamber than its margin alone would suggest.

Our generic-ballot average stands at D+6.5 across 26 polls in the last 45 days, close to the mean margin our model gives Michigan. For now, the MSU pair confirms rather than changes the picture: 63 days out, our estimate of the race is where it was.
