Poll reaction NC-3

NC-3 forecast moves away from the one poll on the board

A Tulchin Research survey for House Majority PAC put Murphy three points ahead of Smith; our latest run widened the expected Republican margin anyway.

The only public polling in North Carolina's 3rd District is a Tulchin Research survey sponsored by House Majority PAC, fielded July 27 to August 2 among likely voters. It found Republican Rep. Greg Murphy at 44 percent and Democrat Raymond Smith Jr. at 41 percent. No sample size or margin of error accompanies the release in our records, and a three-point gap in a single partisan-sponsored poll describes a close survey result, not an established lead.

Our model has not followed it. The current run gives Murphy a better than 99 percent chance and puts the expected result at R+25.8, with a 5th-to-95th percentile range from R+42.2 to R+9.6. Smith's chance rounds to zero — 0 in 100. That is a shift away from the poll, not toward it: our previous run, at 4:03 PM ET on August 31, had the mean margin at R+24.1 and Smith at 1 percent. The near-term movement here is in the model's own inputs, not in new survey data, and it is small relative to the width of the distribution.

Even at the low end of that range, the poll sits outside what our simulation treats as likely. The 95th percentile outcome for Smith is a nine-point loss.

Nationally, our generic-ballot average stands at D+6.5 across 28 polls in the last 45 days. Our model gives Democrats a 93 percent chance of reaching the 218 seats needed for House control, with a mean of 240.1 seats. One caveat on that figure is ours: our simulation correlates error nationally, by census division, by state and by district, but we have no cluster data to correlate demographically similar districts across state lines, so the House control number is somewhat firmer than a fuller error model would leave it.
