Zenith poll puts Rounds ahead of Bengs, and our South Dakota forecast holds
The new survey's 53-47 result lands near the narrow edge of our simulated range, and our odds and margin are identical to the previous run.

A Zenith Research survey of 500 likely voters in South Dakota, fielded September 24-27, has Republican Sen. Mike Rounds at 53% and independent Brian Bengs at 47%.
Our forecast did not change with it. Our model gives Rounds a 99 in 100 chance of winning the seat and Bengs a 1% chance. Our projected margin is R+22.5, the same as in our 11:02 AM ET run today. The 5th-to-95th percentile range in our simulations also held, at R+38.9 to R+6.1.
The Zenith result sits near the narrow end of that range, just outside it. A single survey of 500 voters carries enough error that one reading at the edge of our range is not enough to move the average. Our model weighs it alongside every other poll of the race and the state's underlying lean, and on that basis Rounds remains a heavy favorite.
So the new poll confirms the gap our model has shown all along between the recent polling and our forecast rather than closing it. Our margin stays wide, and our odds stay where they were.
